Cloughey is a sleepy little
village nestling beside the Irish Sea about three quarters
of the way down the Ards Peninsula. From whatever direction
you come the drive to Kirkistown Castle is among the
most scenic in Northern Ireland.
From Bangor the A2 hugs the Irish Sea Coastline virtually
all the way to Portaferry. From Newtownards the A20
skirts Strangford Lough for 11 miles to Kircubbin and
then cross the Ards Peninsula (5 miles) to Cloughey.
Approaching from the South you have the option of coming
through Downpatrick and have the chance to visit the
picturesque villages of Strangford and Portaferry and
cross by boat ferry the treacherous Narrow Water linking
Strangford Lough and the Irish Sea. Millions of gallons
of water flow through the Lough entrance at each tide.
